I first met Steve during a visit to Let’s Talk when I was the Plains Division Director. I introduced myself, and he shared his long history with Toastmasters, explaining why Fall contests were so important to him. When I said, “I do not have control over the Fall contest,” he laughed, and that lightened the mood for our conversation. He then opened up about his battle with cancer, and we connected over our shared love for Jesus. Even with everything he was facing, Steve still managed to drive and attend Let’s Talk meetings in person, showing just how resilient he was.
For all of us in District 50 Toastmasters, it’s crucial to share why we’re involved in Toastmasters whenever we can. It’s not just about getting a job promotion or having your HR department cover the cost. Steve kept going with Toastmasters because he genuinely cared about people. I’m really thankful for the chance to have met him; his dry humor always made me smile, even if he wasn’t laughing along.
Here’s what some of our Toastmasters had to say about Steve:
Even while battling cancer, Steve kept mentoring club members and welcoming new faces to Let’s Talk. His dedication and legacy will surely inspire us all.
—Rita Taylor, DTM
When I became an Area Governor, Steve was right there with support and advice for my contests. He was also on my DTM committee, and I really doubt I would have hit that goal without his encouragement.
—Joyce Ancell, DTM
Steve was truly a gentle giant. He was a mentor, teacher, encourager, and friend. His kindness, willingness to help, and commitment to other members’ growth have made a real impact on so many Toastmasters. He helped us all become better leaders and better people.
—Monica Rose, DTM
Steve really set the bar high for what an advanced club should be. He brought amazing humor, unique views, and deep insights to our meetings. He was my favorite evaluator, and I always looked forward to his feedback. Even when he couldn’t physically make it to our club anymore, he never wavered in his commitment to mentoring.
—Vice President, Public Relations, Let’s Talk Advanced Toastmasters
As you read this, take a moment to think about the mark Steve left on all of us and how you, too, can create a lasting legacy. May our Lord open his arms to you for all the lives you touched and changed during your time here. Until we meet again, keep shining.
